Earth works- Excavations and Backfilling.

From hand pits, window samples and trial pits to more sophisticated and detailed investigations, Dochar Engineering Limited offer an integrated ground investigation service providing quality data to the construction industry.

Dochar offers evaluations for the impact of subsurface conditions on site development and earthwork operations, alternative foundation systems and other considerations related to subsurface construction. These services have been utilized for buildings, bridges, roadways, sewer lines, wastewater treatment facilities, tunnels, dams, levees, water storage tanks, landfills, communication towers and material investigations. Supporting the professional staff are experienced laboratory technicians and field personnel. Thorough training has provided them with a practical understanding of geotechnical problems required for thorough field observations, documentation and decision making.

The human resources within our firm has been developed with a blend of technical experience and practical background through a wide variety of projects. The professional staff is comprised of personnel from a variety of institutions and experience. This diversity provides a broad perspective for practical solutions to complex geotechnical problems. Because of the rapidly changing field of geotechnical engineering, Dochar maintains an up-to-date technical library. In-house computer systems are also utilized for rapid analysis of complex technical problems.

Analysis and Evaluation of Subsurface Conditions

The geotechnical engineering staff of Dochar provides a thorough analysis and evaluation of subsurface conditions and interprets them to arrive at design criteria for foundation and earthwork systems. Dochar engineers possess the judgment and experience to arrive at innovative, practical and economical solutions. For analysis and evaluation of subsurface conditions, Dochar personnel are familiar with the use and interpretation of data from numerous sources, including:

  • Exploratory test borings and pits
  • Exploratory test soundings including the cone penetrometer
  • Geophysical methods including gravity, resistivity and seismic.
  • Pressuremeter testing
  • Aerial photography
  • Geologic and soil survey maps

Upon completion of the analysis phase of a geotechnical engineering assignment, a written report is generally issued which:

  • Identifies pertinent subsoil and groundwater conditions
  • Presents value engineering concepts as appropriate
  • Evaluates alternate foundation and earthwork systems
  • Recommends specific design criteria for each system
  • Presents cost estimates, if required
  • Outlines methods of minimizing geotechnically-related construction problems
  • Stability and seepage analyses

Design of Foundations and Earthwork Systems

Dochar also draws on many years of specialized experience in designing many types of foundations including: spread footings; mat foundations; piles; and caissons (drilled shafts). In addition, the firm provides engineering services for:

  • Roadways and parking areas, including pavement design using the AASHTOWare Pavement ME Design which incorporates the Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG) approach
  • Surface and subsurface drainage systems
  • Natural slopes and embankments, including dams
  • Tunnels
  • Earth retention systems including retaining walls, temporary sheeting and bracing and tied-back walls
  • Underpinning, grouting and ground modification techniques

Dochar draws on sound engineering principles and a broad background of experience in selecting the foundation or earthwork system best-suited for a project and does the design work with safety as well as economy in mind.

Consultation on Special Problems

Dochar is prepared to resolve special problems caused by improper construction techniques or unusual or unanticipated soil, water or rock conditions. Dochar engineers are available for consultations, conducting studies and investigations, preparing reports and recommendations. Some of the projects we have provided consultation on include:

  • Settlement and deflection of structures
  • Damage to underground utilities
  • Pavement failure
  • Landslides and seepage
  • Sinkholes in Karst formations
